About Me

> Who I am

I’m a trained copyeditor and proofreader with more than 20 years of professional experience in publishing and project management. More than a decade of this experience is from in-house production and management roles at Duke University Press and two book and journal publishing services companies. I have a bachelor’s degree in English and earned two editing certificates from the Poynter Institute as well as a specialized certificate from UC-San Diego Extension’s yearlong Copyediting program.

When not editing, I am active and outdoors as much as possible, hiking, running, or mushroom foraging. I also have a professional plant-based culinary certification and create many of my own recipes. I’m always eager to get my hands on the latest vegan cookbooks, and I also enjoy short fiction, poetry, memoirs, horror, and self-help books.

I live and work in Durham, North Carolina.

> What I work on

I’ve worked mainly with nonfiction on a wide range of content. Categories that would be a good match for me are:

  • Books, journals, and magazines: production editing, copyediting, proofreading, fact-checking

    • Memoir: copyediting and proofreading

    • Prescriptive and educational material: textbooks, online courses, recipes, how-to/manuals, reports

  • Business and job application documents: resume, CV, and cover letter proofreading

  • Promotional or marketing collateral: product labels, brochures, blog posts, newsletters

  • Website copyediting and proofreading

If your project doesn’t fall into one of these categories but you think I’d be a good fit, don’t hesitate to reach out, and I’ll let you know what I can do.  I’m

> What I bring

Editing can be meticulous, but it shouldn’t feel punitive. I’ll treat our work as a collaboration; I’ll listen attentively, revise thoughtfully, keep your readers in the forefront, and give positive feedback as well as suggestions for improvement. If you’re a publisher or book packager, I have formal, hands-on publishing experience so I understand the process.

I strive to build relationships based on trust and transparency. These relationships often develop into long-term engagements, which I welcome! Clients can count on me to deliver results and can expect clear communication, responsiveness, and professionalism along with kindness and a sense of humor.

I love to learn and apply my curiosity as both a reader and editor to my work. I belong to two professional editorial organizations, and I regularly take courses and attend conferences through these and other organizations to stay current on language and industry trends and keep my skills sharp.

. . . and the fox?

The fox in my branding was inspired by my love of animals, nature, and typography. I can spend hours browsing fonts, which is synonymous with the “quick brown fox” pangram. I’d be hard-pressed to choose a favorite font or animal, but my favorite punctuation is the em dash, though the interrobang has the best name.

“Christa has been one of the most valuable resources in my pursuit of fiction writing. I've been able to dive much deeper into my writing . . . I didn't even realize I was stuck on the surface. Editors can be intimidating to new writers, but Christa’s methods left me with new insights that enhanced my work and helped me develop my own ideas. Working with her feels like no stone is left unturned. I highly recommend her for writers at any point in their career.
